You’re right, it tends to work best if you’re subtle. I like to build up as many very thin pale layers as possible (starting from light to dark) and only adding darker colours/thicker paint when I am certain it’s time. Practice and repetition is how you’ll become more confident, it’s really just a matter of playing around. Have a look at watercolour paintings in real life, and play around with types of paper- that changes things again.

All of my paintings are predominantly watercolour with a bit of gouache here and there! If you mean the most recent picture I’ve posted, it’s all watercolour.
